How Losing a Race Turned Into a Winning Business Opportunity

In 2012, I decided to run for District 7 Supervisor in San Francisco. While I lost by 132 votes, I gained tremendous experience and new relationships that I carry with me in my new venture.

In 2013, I started the FX Crowley Company to help grow the entertainment, travel and hospitality industries and promote policies which help working people.

My commitment is rooted in my career as the 15-year Business Manager for the International Alliance for Theatrical Stage Employees and Film Technicians (IATSE), Local 16, the largest entertainment union in Northern California.

I also served as President and Commissioner of the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission as well as San Francisco Port Commissioner. I have served three terms on San Francisco Travel’s Board of Directors (formerly the San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau) and have been a member of the San Francisco Labor Council’s Executive Board since 1994.

Throughout my journey from labor leader to candidate to entrepreneur, I never traveled alone. I have enjoyed tremendous support, counsel and friendships from people in all parts of my life who continue to energize me and drive my passion to problem-solve and help our greater community.

The X Factor

My wife, Nancy Hayden Crowley, is one of those folks. She has worked in public relations, marketing and fund raising, most recently as the fund raiser and communications director for my Supervisorial campaign.

Nancy writes copy for websites and printed material. She writes E-mails and fund raising letters. Whatever you need written, Nancy can write it for you.

Nancy asks a lot of questions, which helps get to the heart of your message. She takes what you want to say and makes you sound great. I know because she did this for me throughout my campaign. Nancy and I grew up in San Francisco and share the distinction of being the sixth of six children in each of our families. We also complement each other’s strengths and are building the FX Crowley Company on a foundation of these skills.
